"Quarantine" means the process to confirm any animal, animal products or animal production inputs whether diseased or not and put such animal, animal products or animal production inputs in isolation in specific place, together with or separately for a period of time as prescribed for their inspection (Nepal Animal Health and Livestock Services Act, 2055 (1999).
Nepal is a landlocked country located between China and India. It has about a thousand kilometers free border to India. Due to porous this border, the animal quarantine has a pivotal role in inspecting the animals and their products that enters through the border to safe guard the country against the infectious animal diseases diseases. Also, the animals that are imported through the foreign countries should be sent through the quarantine process for screening against the foreign animal diseases. In such conditions the border and internal quarantine processes should be managed properly.
The country should be kept in a top watch against the entry of the transboundary animal diseases (TADS): highly pathogenic influenza (HPAI) along with highly pathogenic emerging and reemerging infectious diseases (HPEID). The pre border and post border surveillance against these diseases should be in a priority. Therefore, the roles of of the animal quarantine offices/check posts of Nepal were to prevent and control outbreak of those infectious diseases within the country.
Like other eight animal quarantine offices , Animal Quarantine office, Kathmandu was established in 2061 (2004). The office of Animal Quarantine ,Kathmandu commands over the two border quarantine check posts each at Tatopani region of Sindhupalchok district, Timure region of Rasuwa district and one internal quarantine checkpost in Ramnagar region of Chitwan district. It has also an animal quarantine check post is located in Tribhuvan International Airport(TIA), Kathmandu.
